What Is A Server Processor?

There are many different terms and technical details related to server processors, that if you are new to the game and looking for servers for sale or maybe a refurbished server processor, it could be bamboozling at first. For a server processor, you’ll find that there are different terms used depending on where you are looking for the information. So you might see one supplier talking about multiple processors or multiple cores, threads or sockets, for example. Let’s take a look at the different aspects of a server processor that you need to understand.

A server processor (CPU) is a very important part of a server. In fact, it is one of the primary components of a sever and the place where all the computations take place that are needed to make sure the different assigned tasks are completed in full. The speed of the server processor core is vital to the required performance levels, as applications become ever more demanding.

Choosing between single or dual server processors is an important decision to make, as a single processor has its limitations considering the development of applications and the demands placed on the processor. When attempting to increase the speed of a single processor it can cause problems due to the heat that is generated, making it almost impossible to work. This is why there was a need to increase the capacity of a server with additional processors within the same server and ensuring that everything worked well together.

Multiple processors (in multiple sockets) – In simple terms, multiple processors just means that each processor in a single server comes together perfectly to complete computational tasks. Each single processor has its own socket, all different processors connect together through the circuitry. A Dual Processor Server just means that a server can hold a maximum of two processors within it.

Multiple cores (within each socket)–A multi-core processor came about due to improvements in circuit technology meaning it was possible to put more components into one processor size. With multi-core processors, the server can save space and experience an improvement in performance levels (although the performance is not as good as with multiple individual processors.

Multiple threads (within each core)–With multiple threads a core can execute over two processing cycles in one movement. What this means is that any unused resources within each processor can be better utilised to help increase the performance levels. If you put this all together, two processors in a single server, with each processor being dual-core based and each core supporting two threads, means that a server can execute eight threads at the same time, helping to boost speed and performance.

Understanding the technical detail behind a server processor is one thing, knowing that you have access to the best refurbished server parts in the UK, is another. Looking for a supplier of spare server parts that is reliable and trustworthy will take you far when putting together your own IT infrastructure in the workplace. Reliable and trustworthy suppliers are a necessity in any business, but when it comes to something as technical as server processors and finding the right parts when buying used and refurbished servers, you need to know that the company you are dealing with can be trusted to deliver quality materials with a fast turnaround.
