Smartphones Are Essentially Computers, Here’s How to Take Better Care of Them

Like desktop computers and laptops, smartphones require the right kind of care and maintenance. That can be a bit difficult to do for many people.

This is because a smartphone is highly portable, which lends itself to a number of threats — accidental drops and scratches, water ingress, and water spills, to name a few.

So what can you do to take better care of these pocket-sized computers?

Invest in the right accessories

The global smartphone accessories market is highly lucrative. According to 2016 data from Statista, the market was worth over $60 billion. This just goes to show the importance of these accessories.

There are a number of options to choose from, but it’s even more crucial to invest in the right kind of accessories — the ones that protect your smartphone.

For one, start with a good screen protector which can shield your smartphone from a number of scratches and accidental drops. While you can find quality screen repair services that can restore your phone to its original state, it’s always a good idea to protect your device right from the get-go.

A mobile phone case is another investment to make. Some users may scoff at the idea of changing the look of a phone every now and then. However, one has to look past the aesthetics and focus on the main function of a case — protecting your smartphone from all sorts of impact.

Clean your device properly

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought the issue of hygiene and sanitation at the forefront. Smartphones collect a lot of dirt, dust, and bacteria through our hands, which touch a variety of surfaces.

It makes sense to clean your device after coming home from work or doing errands. However, it’s important to exercise caution.

Even if your smartphone is water resistant, don’t put it under a running faucet or pour isopropyl alcohol over it. Be sure to turn off your device first before wiping it down gently with a microfiber cloth.

Next, you can spray some mobile cleaning liquid or soapy water on the cloth to remove any germs or bacteria. Never use abrasive household cleaning solutions.

After cleaning, give it about 15 to 30 minutes to fully dry. You can also use a separate and dry microfiber cloth to speed up the process. Don’t use your device right away or charge it right after thoroughly cleaning it.

Protect your device from harsh elements

Smartphones can deteriorate when exposed to extreme temperatures.

At the very least, the battery will drain faster in cold temperatures. At worst, frequent exposure to the latter can cause moisture build-up within a device’s internal systems and lead to serious issues.

If you find yourself traveling to a region with above average cold temperatures — or if you actually live there — keep your smartphone from being excessively exposed to the cold. Store your device in the warmest part of your jacket or keep the device indoors as much as possible.

On other hand, if you’re residing in warmer temperatures, just make sure to keep your device from overheating due to direct sunlight.
